Furniture Renovation: Sanding, Stripping, and Staining

Months ago, we landed this $15 sturdy table at Goodwill and it was all sorts of colors. Green, white, brown, natural wood…a little bit of a smorgasbord really.

So, I decided to finally bust out this project and started off stripping it using my favorite stripping agent, Citristrip. I have a love hate relationship with stripping furniture. For example, with this piece of furniture I had to apply Citristrip several times, so much so, I had to use a couple of very large bottles. The paint was so difficult to get off that I decided to even bust out the power washer and spray the piece down (I would only suggest doing this on super sturdy wood pieces and during a warm, sunny day, so that the sun can dry out the piece rather than letting the water soak into the wood and potentially warping the piece). Thankfully, the power washer did successfully help remove most of the stubborn paint! If there is any paint left over, a quick sanding can really help.

After I was able to strip it down to the natural wood, I gave it one good sanding, and then I decided to seal it with a coat of Minwax Polycrylic Matte sealer. After living with it for several months, I realized the light wood (see picture below) didn’t really vibe with the design aesthetic of our family room space, so we decided to go dark!

I love to use my orbital sander and mouse sander. Grant recently purchased the mouse sander and I am OBSESSED with it because it can reach all of those hard to reach spots that my orbital sander cannot.

So, we had to sand off the polycrylic finish, and add on a Minwax stain in the color Dark Walnut and man alive it is PERFECT! Due to the fact that I am pregnant, Grant stained the table outside because the fumes are so strong, the person at the hardware store said that he would not recommend I apply it, even if I was wearing a mask applying the stain outside.

I didn’t use these for my specific project but thought these would be a great alternative, as they are rated super high!

We sealed it with a matte polyurethane (called Varathane) and it is as good as new…CHEERS to officially being done working on this table FOR GOOD!!! Here is the finished product, we can’t wait to see what she looks like on our new rug!
